The Abyssal page of first gen concept art.

So heres all the concept sketches ive got for The Abyss so far. its mostly ideas for monsters, each with different abulities and weakness, all designed for intersting, unique gameplay. things like blind but acute hearing, a particularly common one.

theres also a few main chartacter concepts buried in this too, with more to come.



The Widow, a female scientist who tried to save herself using variations of insect venoms, the section she specialised in, but it didn't work. the unique virus adapted to it and used whatever it could from the serum instead of flatout destroying it.
Excellent vision.


 Standard mutant. The virus is allowed to mutate the host in prime, ordinary conditions. This is the most common. Often travels in packs of 2 or 3.
Is near blind, can kind of see for about a meter, excellent hearing.


The drone, a variation of the Medic strain of Abyssal virus.
Not very human like, more like a dog, not very smart, easy to predict, good smell, average sight, good hearing.


I havnt figured out a name for this yet, its an Abyssal Volatile (Abyssal mutant that grows in wet conditions). A side effect of the Volatile strain is that the wet conditions produce large pimples of highly potent, slightly acidic venom that the Volatiles can use as a final stand or defence mechanism.
This creature is slow, deaf, and cant smell but can see quite well and is extremely dangerous if it gets close enough. Engage from a distance if possible.




Standard Volatile Moan. Wanders around moaning, easy to spot, pops when it dies before regenerating.
Thats right, the Abyssal virus regenerates tissue at an accelerated rate. Check out its origins, ill put it up somewhere. Its a long story.

The Spleaker. Its entire organ system has rearranged into a mouth organism.

Main character, James.




The Mammoth. A boss. Its frozen corpse was regenerated by the Abyssal virus, triggered by a short zap to the brain to kick start the healing process. Its body quickly deteriorated after it revived and its mutations are extreme. It will not die. You actually cant kill it, you can try hold it down with a building and get away. Thats about it.



The Sluzza will follow your scent for the whole game, if you ever backtrack you may come across one hunting you. Completely blind but excellent smell.

The Grasper, another common creature. Short sighted but has good smell and excellent hearing. Travels in packs of 4 or 5.



 Yes, that Spleaker has a carrot in his butt.


 The Volatile Elder, what a Volatile Moan grows up into if it survives the other Abyssal mutants. Extremely dangerous with excellent senses except smell. Will release clouds of deadly, infectious spores if weak or simply doesnt want to fight.

This is a goat concept Tahiwi drew up. Some of the animals from the animal testing levels mutated aswell.

 Grasper face.



The Arachnid, a host that was infected via the Widow. These will not try to kill you but take you alive to the Widow.

Yes its the Abyssal Flit, or 'The Batman'. A hanged man that mutated and peeled the skin off his stomach to escape the noose. 





 The Flits bottom jaw is hinged to allow for bigger bites.


 not... not included. thats from my imagination.


The Volatile... something. slow, blind and deaf, this creature lives in shallow water and uses the surface to sense for movements. releases deadly spores if its made aware of you.
